Artist Spotlight - Big Boss E (Houston, TX)
On September 9, 1982, a star was born, and you know him as Big “Boss” E. He was born at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York to wonderful parents, Earl Brown Sr. and Venus Williams-Brown. He was an especially intelligent child, always known for brightening up the day. By the age of eight, young Earl was a clear leader amongst his peers.
As years passed, Big “Boss” E began to explore his talents further while attending Brooklyn PS97. He began to engage in a new form of music called Hip Hop. After hearing a song by Snoop Dogg, who later became his favorite rapper of all time, he then knew his life’s dream. He completely submerged himself in the music. Observing it. Learning it. Living it. He worked hard at his craft, developing a hardcore East Coast style. At the age of 11, his family made the decision to move down south to Houston, Texas. Young Earl was introduced to a new southern style of rap which he immediately embraced. Young Earl’s lyrical style matched with southern dance beats made him unstoppable in the Houston underground music scene. He did whatever he had to do to keep his name stamped in people’s mind, including promoting parties and any event where he could get some publicity. Due to his hard work and determination, he soon began opening up for local groups proving that he was force to be reckoned with in hip hop world.
In 1996, young Earl’s father, inspired by his son’s passion for hip hop, started VIP Entertainment and Records. Although the record label fell short of success due to budget and roster issues, young Earl stayed determined to achieve his dream. He focused on his education, graduating from high school in 2001 and then attending Texas Southern University. However, young Earl was more focused on music than school and eventually ended up dropping out.
As he tirelessly pursued music over the years, he became known to his peers as Big E. Now reloaded with songs that will takeover the radio and clubs, Big E is ready to show his family and the world how much of a big boss he is when it comes to music. His goals are not only to launch his debut album, Grape Jelly, but for it to be one of the classics. As Big E says, “Grape Jelly is here to stay!.”
