Mixtape Review: Mary Liz "The Princess is Here"

Mary Liz - The Princess Is Here

I’ve done many reviews and artist features from the Carolinas, but have yet to come across an RnB artist. I’ve been waiting for some good singing from an independent artist out of the Carolinas, and I’ve finally found some! Mary Liz is truly gifted. This young, multi-talented songbird has released her first mixtape titled “The Princess is Here” hosted by Stupid Dope Moves’ own DJ Frosty. Mary Liz showcased a healthy combination of vocals, melodies, and piano skills on this project, proving that she is more than just your average singer.

The intro was great, fellow South Carolinians Boondak assisted in making a strong first impression for Mary Liz. They have a classic southern style with catchy lyrics that grab your attention. Although their display was enjoyable, Mary Liz still shined through, as she should. As I always say, quite often the artist gets outshined by their guest, but in this case Boondak’s dopeness didn’t defeat her, instead it complimented her. Boondak made another appearance on “Satisfied” and blessed us with more of their lyrical and production. The majority of the mixtape were remixes of popular industry tracks, including “Run This Town” and Trey Songz “Just Gotta Make It”. I particularly liked her version of R. Kelly’s “Number One” remix. That’s not a song to play shy on, and she definitely didn’t! I appreciated her delivery and harmonies, well done. Other honorable mentions: “I Have Arrived”, “Memories”, and “Love Me Baby”, which were all excellent displays of her vocal range and melodic capabilities. I must say my favorite track was her rendition of Anthony Hamilton’s “Charlene”, which she titled “Comin Home”. When doing RnB you have to sing with emotion, and if you want to truly make a hit, you must sing a story. She did both, delivering heart-felt lyrics and pure soul.

Mary Liz will definitely be talked about beyond just the Carolina community soon enough. Anyone with working ears will not be able to deny this young lady. With steady practice, writing, and tuning, she will be unstoppable. Good luck Mary Liz!
