With Brandon Roy missing Tuesday's night's game due to pain and swelling in his knee, the Blazers' Wesley Matthews stepped into the starting line up and delivered a career-high 30 points.
The Breakdown
Since Roy is ailing, he could miss games sporadically depending on how badly the knee is hurting. With news that he's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Wednesday, Roy could be shut down for an extended period. This would open the door for Matthews, or possibly Rudy Fernandez, to take on a bigger role in the future.
At this point, fantasy owners in deep leagues should pounce on Matthews and Fernandez if they're available. They may not produce immediately, but both guys have a chance to log major minutes if Roy goes down for a few weeks. Given that Matthews started and played big minutes tonight, you'd have to give him the edge over Fernandez.
In standard leagues, I would not rush to pick up either of them until we hear definitive news that Roy will sit out a large chunk of games unless you have a player you can afford to drop. We should find out whether Roy will be shut down or undergo surgery within the next day or so.
