With Portland Trailblazers star guard Brandon Roy sitting out, Wesley Matthews once again stepped into the starting line up and produced a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in 40 minutes.
The Breakdown
Head coach Nate McMillan is clearly going with Matthews over Rudy Fernandez as Roy's replacement. Still, it's tough to decide whether Matthews is worth a roster spot in standard leagues. On the one hand, he's playing very well in Roy's place and Brandon could miss a number of games this season. On the flip side, Matthews just hasn't produced enough when Roy is on the court to be worth holding onto long term until we know for a fact Roy will miss an extended period.
Our recommendation is to grab him as long as you have someone you can afford to drop. Once Roy returns, you'll want to hang onto Matthews for two-to-three weeks to see how Roy performs and whether he's able to stay on the court. If Roy appears to be fully healthy and Matthews fails to perform, you can then go ahead and drop him. With the uncertainty regarding Brandon Roy's ability to play, you have to exercise patience if you decide to pick up Matthews in a standard-sized league.
