Kate Towers - Designer, Seamstress, Artist

Kate Towers describes herself as "self taught through experimentation"... her pieces are handmade and inspired by romance and nature.

Along with these amazing photos, Kate's creations excite me!! They make me want to whip out my sewing machine and just create something beautiful with luscious fabrics... We share a love of ruffles it seems.

One of the best things is you can buy her work on Etsy - wooooo! I say get in while you can. I love being inspired, don't you?! Cheers Kate!

Photoluminesent "trap lights"

Photoluminesent "trap lights" by Gionata Gatto and Mike Thompson:
The project proposes a radical new approach to lighting design through the use of photoluminescent pigments to capture escaping light; and converting waste energy back into visible light.

Photoluminesence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is gradually released as light, and using the Murano glass blowing technique, the designers were able to embed photoluminescent pigments into the glass body of the lamp.

Through this process, Trap Light becomes both shade and light source, emitting, absorbing, and re-emitting light.

Thirty minutes ‘charge’ of recycled light from a traditional incandescent or LED light bulb provides up to eight hours of ambient lighting.

Children's design

These fabulous, fun items are from Sweedish company, Little Red Stuga. Tell your kids to go and climb Mt Everest, Fuji or Kilimanjaro (which is my personal favourite).

'Play' - a folding plywood screen, easy to move around and change form. My daughter would love this - especially for our games of hide and seek.

Saved the best till last - these colourful foam cloud cushions make me want to play too! I hav a spring in my step this morning - as it's the start of the weekend!! I am doing some decorating in the children's room finally as I have spent 6 long months procrastinating over it. It is much easier to do on the weekends with hubby home, so I am itching to get going :-) Have a magical and relaxing one.

Baby Teepees are like, totally, in.

The newest accessory for your already perfect nursery? A tipi of course! Eagle-eyed readers Andrea, Laura, and Mieko spotted these "adorable" tipi's all over tumblr last week. Most of the pictures are from Design Chic, and here's how the author sets up a slew of tipi-pics:
Grown-up or child, we all need a little bit of space that is all ours. Last week, I was looking for the perfect gift for my nephew's two-year-old birthday. I wanted to give him a cute tent to put in the yard, but Mom suggested a teepee instead. What a perfect gift! He loves it, learned a great, new, easy-to-pronounce vocabulary word, and, most important, it looks adorable in the house but can go outside at any time. Definitely a winning combination.  These teepees are not only the perfect place for a child's imagination to run wild, but also add a whimsical design touch to the room (or yard). We hope you love them as much as we do!

Um, yeah. I laughed out loud at Julia's commentary on her tumblr (she blogs at A'allure Garconniere as well), and I really don't think I can say it any better:
Teepees are great because they are whimsical! (as opposed to tents, those are just boring) teepees are great because it’s a new, simple, easy to pronounce vocabulary word for a two year old! (because “tent” is just so overly complicated). teepees are great, because as a rich white privileged person, they allow me to relegate western plains native people to this archaic, whimsical, historical vestige of the past, instead of confronting my nation’s history of colonization and acknowledging native people’s lives and ways of living as complex and multifaceted. this new teepee trend is just so great, because now expensive design companies can make a buck by selling western plains native iconography as playtime places for kids in the suburbs!

I’m so happy incorporating teepees into my home decor allow my child the opportunity to erase my nation’s history of violence and cultural genocide by encouraging his imagination run wild about the ways he, too, can be cultural appropriative when he grows up.
Love it! Whenever I post about tipi's, like when I talked about the Glastonbury music festival in the UK last year, I tend to get push back. "It's just a tent!" people say. "We're not allowed to appreciate Native technology?" they protest. My problem is that the tipis I see and the discussions around them always seem to involve some level of fantasy play, you're not just hanging out in a tent that looks like a tipi. At the music festival it was adding to the whole free-rugged-in-nature-wild-thing athestic, these kid-tipis are encouraging "playing Indian" in the most literal way possible. I don't know if you can have an innocent usage, because I feel like no matter what there's a fetishization of "how Indians lived before"--and it continues the stereotypes that we all live/lived in tipis. I don't know. I'll ruminate as we look at a bazillion more pictures:

All of these are from Design Chic, and there are more on the post, if you need them. So what do you think? Cultural appropriation? Cringe-worthy? Should we just be glad the benevolent design bloggers have deemed us cool for a minute? Should I fly into a uncontrollable rage? NATIVE HULK TEEPEE SMASH!!

(Thanks Andrea, Laura, Meiko, and Julia!)

Friday Favourites - DIY Cross Stitch Wall Art

I love when people think outside the box and create something beautiful and unique. Freelance designer and illustrator, Eline Pellinkhof has done just that with her giant cross-stitch painting. I could see this on a little girl's wall, I think it is so clever. These birds on the branch are too cute.

See Eline's interview on Bloesem. By the way, loving that Irene from B-Kids is now doing Bloesem Living, she has great taste! All images via Bloesem Living.

Have you discovered Pinterest?

Oh my you will be hooked! Pinterest is a great place to collect all the fabulous images you see and want to remember or drool over daily on the web - virtual inspiration boards basically! I am slowly putting my boards together although my internet time feels more limited than ever these days - I know my google reader is groaning with inspiration begging to be read! I 'pinned' this stunning Hydrangea bouquet on my 'flower board' the other day from Mondo Floral Designs in Qld.

Mondo's work is gorgeous and they have a great real wedding diary for you to feast on - if you are getting hitched or just like flowers or weddings! I really like these bridesmaid dresses and in such a gorgeous shade of purple!

A mix of simple, clean lines and more intricate detail in these bedrooms.

I don't like the colours in this one but like the interesting doors and love the walk in bathroom and big bathtub!

Love the simplicity of this bedroom, it looks very peaceful.

Perfect girlishness.

Porcelain Jewellery by MaaP Studio

Gorgeous contemporary porcelain jewellery from MaaPstudio. The above piece was featured along with my headband in the lovely Treasury yesterday.

Pieces are made from parian porcelain clay and inspired by nature - just my thing. I don't know if I could trust myself with a porcelain ring! I love these though.

You would certainly be wearing something unique sporting one of these lovely designs!

Get me some Vera Wang

I found these stunning photos of some Vera Wang gorgeous on [design] relevant. The embellishments used on these outfits are stunning - particularly the collars and 'jewellery'. I thought the bottom right 'collar' was made from feathers but on closer inspection on the Vogue website - I think it is fabric, simply beautiful! I wouldn't mind a pair of those pins either :-)

Attia

My new favourite range of home wares - Attia by Rachel Brown. How divine, really makes me oohh and ahh, I want to touch everything and the palette....perfect!!

I discovered Attia via the equally divine blog Daily Imprint by Natalie Walton (be warned you will stay for AGES) - all part of the wider Real Living family.

Love, love, love...

Rachel was also involved in a pop up shop for before Christmas called “The Living Room”. I have only seen Pop up shops on US blogs, namely David Stark - event genius, so was thrilled to see one here.

Decor from Decoylab

Hello world we are back! I hope you had a lovely break ready for the challenges and fun times that 2011 might bring. Some fun items from Decoylab that I found via Mskat (otherwise known as Amanda).

I particularly like this wish list clipboard - pass it around the family for birthday and Christmas lists then hang in a common area for all to have a big eye. No excuses for not knowing what you want!

Polka Luka Exhibition and Sale

It is that time of year again when Alexandra comes to town and displays her lovely wares at the
Front Cafe and Gallery at Lyneham (just down from Tilley's). I scooped up some bargains last Christmas and distributed them for birthday presents throughout the year and snagged a couple of lovely items for myself which I love wearing - very comfy! So get on down there, you won't be disappointed! Opening night this Thursday.
