Labor Day weekend is a time when people can enjoy parades, picnics, baseball, and time with their families. For the past five years it was also a time when people could enjoy watching Louisville play Kentucky on ESPN in the first game of the season for both teams. According to the Courier-Journal in Louisville that will not be the case this year. The two teams moved their game back two weeks to September 15th and the switch has resulted in the game being without a national broadcast home. Even though ESPN, ESPN2, and even ESPNU are booked there is still hope for a national broadcast: ESPN Classic has expressed interest in airing the game. This development brings to mind two interesting points. First, ESPN Classic is a farce. How can it air live games? Wasn't the whole point of the channel to air games that were "classics"? Now all the station seems to air are World Series of Poker reruns and trick shot competitions. The second point though, is the sad part of this entire dilemma. The game actually does have the potential to be a classic for once. In a series where Louisville has won seven of the past eight games, many of them being blowouts, Kentucky actually stands a good chance this year. Coming off their first bowl season in 22 years and boasting a Heisman candidate in QB Andre Woodson Kentucky has their best team in decades. Too bad the country may not get to see them in their biggest showcase of the season.
